Important Information about Driveway Regulations

For property buyers on the Fraser Coast, there has been recent directions given by Council regarding considerations about vehicle crossovers.

What is a Vehicle Crossover?

A vehicle crossover is the section of your driveway that runs from the kerb/road to the property boundary.

Do I require Council approval to construct a new Vehicle Crossover?

To construct a new vehicle crossover, whether the driveway is existing or brand new, you must obtain a permit from the Fraser Coast Regional Council.  The relevant Application Form can be found on the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s website  www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/forms.  The type of vehicle crossover that will be required for your property will depend on the property conditions and whether or not road located at the front of the property is controlled by the Fraser Coast regional Council or a State Controlled Road.

Can a Vehicle Crossover be constructed by the property owner?

A property owner can construct their own vehicle crossover provided that the relevant Permit has been obtained.  Should you wish to complete the necessary works yourself it is important that you comply with all the Vehicle Crossover Permit conditions.

Does a property owner have responsibilities?

Yes, as a property owner you are responsible for the construction, management and continuing maintenance of the vehicle crossover.  It is important that the vehicle crossover does not present a public safety hazard or nuisance.

Construction/Maintenance of the Vehicle Crossover

As the Property Owner, you are responsible for the construction and maintenance of the whole driveway including the vehicle crossover section.   When constructing the vehicle crossover it is important that you abide by the conditions of the Vehicle Crossover Permit issued by the Fraser Coast Regional Council along with the Queensland Workplace Health and Safety Regulations and Local Laws.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council have developed a Fact Sheet that provides an overview of the requirements for Vehicle Crossovers. And can be found on the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s website  https://www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/downloads/file/1915/vehicle-crossovers.

For further information in relation to vehicle crossovers or if you require a Vehicle Crossover (Driveway) Application, please contact the Fraser Coast Regional Council on 1300 794 929. We assist buyers and sellers of property throughout Queensland and if you are considering purchasing a property and either constructing or upgrading a driveway, you should check you local Council’s rules for your location.
